The strangest thing I ever put in still life was raw chicken. This was a paint raw meat challenge. I should have chosen beef but the whole thing made me queasy. The point is anything can be a still life. It is all shape, value and pattern. It is fun to set up your own world and these china dogs were happy to play with the big shiny "ball".
What was the strangest thing you ever put in still life?

As long as the color you are adding is the same value as the shape you are adding it to you can drop color anywhere. I like to drop cerulean blue into the darker fur on a dog because it looks less flat and dull if you do so.
This is Callie our new collie puppy. She is going to be one of the greats! Please join my Youtube channel or tell a friend about it. I would love to grow a bit larger. To keep me engaged in making content. Today I am interested in the big why? Why do you paint? What do you think about when you paint? Why is it important?
What I have learned so far: My big why is about learning every time I try to paint something new. There is more about my why in this video. I finally finished my happy cups painting. It is 14x20. It took me a couple of weeks to finish because of this Her name is Callie. She is a six month old tri colored lady. This is my first female collie and I am happy to report she is super healthy. She is all puppy. Yesterday she discovered she could go up steps. This has never happened with a collie before. I always had a dog free zone on the second floor of this house. Not any more. She thinks stairs are really cool and she likes to keep track of where we are so there is a steady traffic flow going on around here.
Today I share the process of how I mix and match colors to a painting that I admire. I have been doing this for about a month and the result is I am finding new mixes and colors that I enjoy. I call this process "dialing in ". I wonder what you call this when you are engaged in trying to mix a color?
What I have learned so far: Having a goal each day is very helpful. This is not an easy time for me but as always painting provides a safe place to fall. Today I painted some Happy Cups. I bought these locally and plan on using them for a variety of still life set ups. They are just so darn cheerful .
My colors for tomorrow are below . He is super famous and I think I have the colors right it is the ratio that is more towards the warm rather than cool colors that makes his art known by all. Tomorrow I will paint with these colors. Can you tell who the artist is from these colors?
Spoiler alert it is all about mixing paint and finding new combinations to achieve your goals and create variety in your work. I used a painting from the Cape Cod school of art to mix colors and then plugged them into a composition I had already painted using my usual colors. I enjoy the result and plan to do more of these. It is fun and lots of learning happens.
What I have learned so far: You don't need to buy more tubes of paint just learn how to mix the colors you have strategically. Making your own color wheel will allows you to see at a glance exactly who your "cast of characters" is. So when the lights go out and the curtain goes up you can know who your actors are instantly. What I have learned so far:
