Today I saw a painter being born in front of my eyes. This is becoming a regular occurrence in the studio, but each time it happens it gives me such a thrill. This coaching student named "R" used the Value Viewer and the photograph together to build this painting according to value shapes. It was so exciting to see it all take form.
What I have learned so far: Painting can be taught systematically just like baking can be taught using a recipe. Sure there is always more to learn and develop but it is not a mysterious process it has rules and if you follow them and have a logical plan you can meet your goals. You can see "R"'s value dabs where she mixed and tested colors before applying them. We had a ball and I know she became an artist today.
